Haiti Earthquake

Guys if this is the bad place for posting this please mod move it to the correct section.
I am shocked from what happened and it is a very urgent news to us all.
God be with them

This is part of the news.

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake which struck off the coast of Haiti is feared to have caused major loss of life in and around the capital, Port-au-PrinceHaiti's envoy to the US said it was a "catastrophe of major proportions".
Buildings, including a hospital, are said to have collapsed, and rescue efforts are under way.
The quake, which struck about 15km (10 miles) south-west of the capital, was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude.
The tremor hit at 1653 (2153 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. Phone lines to the country failed shortly afterwards.
A Reuters reporter in Port-au-Prince said he had seen "dozens of dead and injured people" in the rubble of fallen buildings.

Karel Zelenka, a Catholic Relief Services representative in Port-au-Prince, told colleagues in the US "there must be thousands of people dead".
The aid worker had managed to phone his colleagues before communication links went down.
The BBC's Nick Davies in neighbouring Jamaica says the ground apparently shook for more than a minute in Haiti.
Local people, he said, were using anything they could get their hands on - including farm equipment - to help release those trapped in the quake.
Our correspondent adds that, as the poorest country in the western hemisphere, Haiti is likely to need international aid in order to cope with the quake's impact.
'Three million affected'
US President Barack Obama said in a statement that his "thoughts and prayers" were with the people of Haiti and America stood ready to assist them.

UN officials said they were having trouble contacting their mission in Haiti to get a clear picture of the aftermath.
We are trying to get in touch with our people on the ground but we are experiencing communication problems, which is not unusual in a disaster such as this," spokeswoman Stephanie Bunker told AFP news agency in New York.
spokeswoman Stephanie Bunker told AFP news agency in New York.
Raymond Joseph, Haiti's ambassador to the US, told CNN: "I think it is really a catastrophe of major proportions
He said he had just spoken to a government colleague in  Port-au-Prince:
"He had to stop his car just about half an hour ago, and take to the streets, start walking, but he said houses were crumbling on the right side of the street and the left side of the street.
"He does not know whether he would reach his home, not knowing what he would find, because he had a bridge cross to get there."
Mike Blanpied of the US Geological Survey said that, based on the location and size of the quake, about three million people will have been severely shaken by its impact.
"This quake occurred under land as opposed to off-shore, so a lot of people were directly exposed to the shaking coming off that earthquake fault, which was quite shallow," he told the BBC.
He added that as the quake had occurred near a highly populated urban area, the aftershocks could cause additional damage to already shaken buildings.
'Rubble and wire'
An Associated Press cameraman saw the wrecked hospital in Petionville, a hilly suburb of the capital, and Henry Bahn, a visiting official from the US Department of Agriculture, said he had seen houses which had tumbled into a ravine.
"Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken," said Mr Bahn, who described the sky as "just grey with dust".
He said he had been walking to his hotel room when the ground began to shake.
"I just held on and bounced across the wall," he said.  "I just hear a tremendous amount of noise and shouting and screaming in the distance."
directly exposed to the shaking coming off that earthquake fault, which was quite shallow," he told the BBC.
He said rocks were strewn all over the place, and the ravine where several homes had fallen in was "just full of collapsed walls and rubble and barbed wire".
BBC News website readers in the Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti on the island of Hispaniola, said they had also felt the quake.
"My family is on the 8th floor of a tower in downtown Santo Domingo," wrote Max Levine.
"We felt a swaying of the building for 5-10 seconds. All the lamps were swinging. There was a 20-second pause and then another similar sway. We rushed out of the building with many others to the street."
In the immediate aftermath of the quake, a tsunami watch was put out for Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas, but this was later lifted

Guys don't forget to supplicate for them  we will be with you guys.

'Ruševina i žica'
„Osetili smo ljuljanje zgrade 5-10 sekundi.

I simply cannot verbalize the many different emotions this brought for me,  I was just horrified to hear this happened.  My prayers go out to every one in Haiti.  I hope the USA acts quickly in this state of emergency along with all the united nations.  Many many prayers go out to Haiti.

Very sad and devastating news to come across for all of us.
All our hearts and prayers go to the people of Haiti, families and friends of those suffering in this sudden unexpected destruction.

Veoma tužna i poražavajuća vest za sve nas.
Sva naša srca i molitve idu narodu Haitija, porodicama i prijateljima onih koji pate u ovom iznenadnom neočekivanom uništenju.

Prayers are great.  However, let me encourage each of you to give sacrificially to a group that will provide direct relief to the suffering people of Haiti.

• Original engleski Prevod srpski

This is true drpsyce38, however, on good morning america this morning they did a segment on this advising people to give to only groups that are listed on their websites list.  A warning was given because there are dirty rotten evil people who will try to scam people just to make a few dollars off of this by claiming to be "relief groups".  So beware, sometimes trying to do the right thing can actually cost much much more, not only to you but to the people of Haiti if given to groups no one has heard of.  Also beware of emails from groups you have not heard of before and/or people you dont know.

I only would give to those who are:

1. Sending food
2. Medicine.
3. Water.
4 Relief workers (No, not Red Cross)

The govt is corrupt there, they cannot easily convert the stuff sent into cash or hide it. So, that's also a warning...

Dao bih samo onima koji su:

1. Slanje hrane
2. Medicina.
3. Voda.

fiscal 2009 the united states has given over 280 MILLION to haiti....BEFORE the earthquake.

where'd that money go?...corrupt??...ya think?

why is it that the other side of the island (dominican republic ) seems to be doing ok?

unless i personally went there and helped someone, they won't be getting a penny from me.

the US isn't the powerhouse it once was...the 100 million we are sending there now could do some serious help here, to people who TRULY need it, not people who are too lazy to get off their asses and help themselves.

fiskalnu 2009.

sad  My heartfelt prayers go out to my brothers and sisters of Haiti, I have donated to Wyclef Jean's organization as he has always been on the forefront working to help Haiti, despite the corruption.  I am a volunteer for the RED CROSS but I won't donate to them.  They have not accounted for the millions already given to them before this.  I am not here to judge anyone but I put my money where I feel in my heart it will be used wisely.  God Bless Haiti!
Bog blagoslovio Haiti!

As someon who has experienced; natural disaster are so scary as you never know when or where they will hit and certainly are uncontrolable.  The people of Haiti are in my heart and on my mind that they will have the strength to get through.

no. i was talking about here, in the united states...people here find themselves  in dire straits through no fault of their own, and can't get help from the gov't, while still others milk the welfare teat for every ounce they can squeeze.

Regardless of the so called corruption, or any other bad things people have to say about Haiti, or any of our disaster relief programs, it is a horrible crisis, disaster, total destruction and devastation of human lives no matter what. I went through my local news station and donated all i have right now which was 200.00, i know that this is probably just a pindrop in the bucket but i can't sit here no longer without doing something that i can do. I'm working on more that i can do as well.

Max1......Oh, I agree with you on the corruption issue.  Most folks on this board will tell you I am anti Obama, anti big government, anti tax and spend!  Just the human carnage in Haiti is so great, I just feel extraordinary measures should be taken to maintain order and keep that situation from becoming a historical human tragedy.

I have donated to Wycleff Jon, Red Cross twice, the amount is not important.  I am a disaster team member where I live and I asked to go there so I can be of service first hand, giving of myself is the best help I can give and I will keep you posted if I go, I have never been to a disaster out of California but would love to go, I dont care if the government is corrupt, judge and you shall not be judged is what I believe!

I dont care who likes me or dislikes me....I LOVE ME and God Bless Haiti!  Lest we shallnot forgot those who have lost there lives in disaster, famine, war, illness.....Rest In God's Perfect Peace!

^5 Imagination that is the spirit of charity!

Nije me briga ko me voli ili ne voli.... VOLIM ME i Bog blagoslovi Haiti!

I may start a new thread on this one.  We in the USA DON'T know what poor is.  Our poorest would be considered rich in Haiti, or a similar nation.  If someone has to leave their home and move into an appartment, they think the world has come to an end......well, it certainly has not.

• Original engleski Prevod srpski

I agree. I have gone from a 3 bd rm house, the a shed 12'x12' and frankly I liked it as I found out I can do without ALOT of things (Though I did miss a/c) but I was hoping for a good result and while it wasn't great, I learned about myself and that's worth something.

Oh BTW I had heard about the At&T donation fund. Now I am on Verizon and didn't know if it would work, well it did and so I have done what I could. I was surprised, but since I may not be able to re-up my phone soon, I felt that giving $10 to the Red Cross is better then letting verizon have the entire $16.88 instead.

GO USA!!!

GO USA!!!

That's one thing I have been hearing and then comes the "What about our own citizens in the USA?"

Yes I agree that ours need help, but stand back and look and think.

A homeless person can get 2-3 meals everyday. Not major fill up on food, but something, even if it's a small sandwich and a cup of thin soup. The people of Haiti don't even have or can get it. And I'm talking about DAILY and before this disaster.

A homeless man can usually find a place for some sleep indoors. Those in Haiti are sleeping outdoors and are at the whim of nature. Plus many are sleeping in the dirt.

A Homeless man (If they so wish) can be retrained at little or low cost, can find a job (Though min wage) and start putting their life back together.

In Haiti, they're lucky if they can get a menial job and don't even think they'll get any retraining.

All in all, they'd love to be homeless in the USA we DO have it better then they can or maybe ever will.

Some a few in our nation live in complete poverty, our "poor" are certainly very wealthy by Haiti standards.

This is so very true, when i was in the navy i went to several POOR nations, now every time i see some "poor" American crying about how they don't get enough free food, free housing, free health care AND FREEEEE MONEY!!!! It makes me sick...knowing that 3.5 billion people on this plant truly live in poverty. Not one man, woman or child in the USA lives in true poverty.

QUESTION not being a smart a-s how do you re-buid a 3rd world country. Do you build tec schools for people that cant read do you send 20 dollar bills. Has everyone should know the people of HAITI WERE STILL IN THE MODE OF WAKING UP EVERY DAY AND PREETY MUCH FINDING FOOD FOR THE DaY. NO JOKE GOGGLE IT. BACK TO THE MONEY FOR A SECOND If you gave a 100 dollar bill right now to any body on the streets of HAITI they would probaly throw in your face and tell you you what the f--k Im  I suppose to do with this there is nothing left and I mean nothing
NOPLACE WHAT SO EVER TO SPEND IT. YES I DONATED 20 DOLLARS ALREADY BUT

NEMA ŠALE GOGGLE IT.

Not to take anything away from Haiti, because it was an awful, awful thing to happen and would have happened had the island been poor or rich. What really gets my goat is there is enough money, manpower and resources on this planet that NO man, woman or child need to know poverty. Hopefully the people of Haiti will be given the opportunity to rebuild their country, but it shouldn't take horrible things happening to make people care.

I guess we are getting our wake up call aren't we... and beleive me it woke me up. Right now, it's going to take money theres no way around that, if we have it to give then give, if not... our prayers and hearts and whatever you got to give.. just give it...
