    Smart
    by Shel Silverstein

My dad gave me one dollar bill
    'Cause I'm his smartest son,
And I swapped it for two shiny quarters
'Cause two is more than one!

And then i took the quarters
    And traded them to Lou
For three dimes - i guess he don't know
that three is more than two!

Just them, along came old blind Bates
And just 'cause he can't see
He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,
And four is more than three!

And i took the nickels to Hiram Coombs
    Down at the seed-feed store,
and the fool gave me five pennies for them,
And five is more than four!

And then i went and showed my dad,
and he got red in the cheeks
And closed his eyes and shook his head-
Too proud of me to speak!

    A onda sam uzeo četvrtine
    I zamenio ih Luu

I odneo sam novčiće Hiramu Kumbsu

A onda sam otišao i pokazao tati,
    i pocrvene u obrazima
I zatvori oči i odmahnu glavom-
Previše ponosan na mene da bih govorio!

Znaš šta.. isto sam radio kad sam bio mali i mislim oh kako pametan... :-[

Sarah Cythia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out:
    Shel Silverstein, 1974

    Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout
Would not take the garbage out!

She'd scour the pots and scrape the pans,
Candy the yams and spice the hams,
And though her daddy would scream and shout,
She simply would not take the garbage out.

And so it piled up to the ceilings:
    Coffee grounds, potato peelings,
    Brown bananas, rotten peas,
    Chunks of sour cottage cheese.
It filled the can, it covered the floor,
It cracked the window and blocked the door

With bacon rinds and chicken bones,
Drippy ends of ice cream cones,
Prune pits, peach pits, orange peel,
    Gloppy glumps of cold oatmeal,
    Pizza crusts and withered greens,
    Soggy beans and tangerines,
Crusts of black burned buttered toast,
Gristly bits of beefy roasts. . .

The garbage rolled on down the hall,
It raised the roof, it broke the wall. . .
    Greasy napkins, cookie crumbs,
    Globs of gooey bubble gum,
    Cellophane from green baloney,
    Rubbery blubbery macaroni,
    Peanut butter, caked and dry,
Curdled milk and crusts of pie,
    Moldy melons, dried-up mustard,
    Eggshells mixed with lemon custard,
Cold french fried and rancid meat,
Yellow lumps of Cream of Wheat.

At last the garbage reached so high
That it finally touched the sky.
And all the neighbors moved away,
And none of her friends would come to play.
And finally Sarah Cynthia Stout said,
"OK, I'll take the garbage out!"

But then, of course, it was too late. . .
The garbage reached across the state,
From New York to the Golden Gate.
And there, in the garbage she did hate,
Poor Sarah met an awful fate,
    That I cannot now relate
Because the hour is much too late.
    But children, remember Sarah Stout
And always take the garbage out!

    Shel Silverstein, 1974

    Sara Sintija Silvija Stout
    Ne bi izneo smeće!

Ona bi ribala lonce i strugala tiganje,
    Slatki jam i začinite šunku,
I iako bi njen tata vrištao i vikao,
Jednostavno nije htela da iznese đubre.

I tako se nagomilalo do plafona:
    Talog od kafe, ljuštenje krompira,
    Smeđe banane, truli grašak,
    Komadići kiselog svježeg sira.
Napunila je konzervu, prekrila je pod,
Razbio je prozor i blokirao vrata

Sa korom slanine i pilećim kostima,
    Okapljeni krajevi korneta sladoleda,
Koštice šljiva, koštice breskve, kora pomorandže,
    Gloppi grimps hladne ovsene kaše,
Kore za picu i uvelo zelje,
    mokri pasulj i mandarine,
Kore crnog zagorenog tosta sa maslacem,
Hrskavi komadići mesnatog pečenja. . .

    Smeće se otkotrljalo niz hodnik,
Podigao je krov, razbio zid. . .
    Masne salvete, mrvice kolačića,
    Kuglice gnjecave žvake,
    Celofan od zelene balone,
    gumeni makaroni,
Puter od kikirikija, pečen i suv,
    Kiselo mleko i kore pite,
    Buđave dinje, osušeni senf,
Ljuske jaja pomešane sa kremom od limuna,
    Hladno pohovano i užeglo meso,

    Smeće je stiglo širom države,
    Od Njujorka do Zlatne kapije.
A tamo, u đubretu koje je mrzela,
Jadna Sara je doživela strašnu sudbinu,
To sada ne mogu da kažem
    Jer je sat prekasno.
    Ali deco, zapamtite Saru Stout
    I uvek iznesite đubre!

    My favorite was allways

Sarah Synthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out

One of my favorites, especially on Saturdays, is SICK

    SICK

"I cannot go to school today,"
    Said little Peggy Ann McKay,
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash, and purple bumps.
My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,
I'm going blind in my right eye.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
    I've counted sixteen chicken pox
    And there's one more--that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
My leg is cut, my eyes are blue--
    It might be instamatic flu.
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke--
My hip hurts when I move my chin,
    My belly button's caving in,
My back is wrenched, my ankle's sprained,
My 'pendix pains each time it rains.
My nose is cold, my toes are numb,
I have a sliver in my thumb.
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
My tongue is filling up my mouth,
I think my hair is falling out.
My elbow's bent, my spine ain't straight,
    My temperature is one-o-eight.
My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,
There is a hole inside my ear.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is--what?
What's that? What's that you say?
    You say today is---Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

    SICK

„Danas ne mogu da idem u školu“,
Rekla je mala Pegi En Mekej,
    „Imam boginje i zauške,
    Osip, osip i ljubičaste kvrge.
Boli me kuk kada pomerim bradu,
    Pupak mi se urušava,
Leđa su mi iskrivljena, skočni zglob uganut,
Moj pendiks boli svaki put kada pada kiša.
Vrat mi je ukočen, glas mi je slab,
    Jedva šapućem kada govorim.
    Jezik mi puni usta,
    Mislim da mi kosa opada.
Lakat mi je savijen, kičma mi nije ravna,
Moja temperatura je jedan o osam.
Mozak mi je smanjen, ne čujem,
    U mom uhu je rupa.
Imam nokat, a srce mi je--šta?
Šta je ovo? Šta to kažeš?
    Kažete da je danas---subota?
    Zbogom, idem da se igram!"

    ~Shel Silverstein~

I have all of these books, and I love them all.  My kids aren't really into them yet, so they are safely put up away from color crayons and little hands ripping them to shreds.  thanks for the reminder.

    Where the Sidewalk Ends:

    Shel Silverstein

There is a place where the sidewalk ends
    And before the street begins,
And there the grass grows soft and white,
And there the sun burns crimson bright,
And there the moon-bird rests from his flight
To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black
And the dark street winds and bends.
Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white arrows go
To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,
For the children, they mark, and the children, they know
The place where the sidewalk ends.

    Gde se trotoar završava:

    Shel Silverstein

Postoji mesto gde se trotoar završava
I pre nego što ulica počne,
I tamo trava postaje meka i bela,
    I tamo sunce grimizno žari,

Napustimo ovo mesto gde crni dim duva
I mračna ulica vijuga i krivi.
Pored jama gde raste asfaltno cveće
    Hodaćemo odmerenim i sporim hodanjem,
I gledaj kuda idu strelice bele krede
Do mesta gde se trotoar završava.

    Da, hodaćemo odmerenom i sporom,
I idemo tamo gde idu strelice bele krede,
Za decu, markiraju, a deca znaju
    Mesto gde se trotoar završava.
